Warmth for the Homeless:
We have had 3 garbage bags and 2 large boxes of yarn donated to us to help keep the homeless of our area warm during the cold months coming up. If you have crochet or knitting talents and would like to make a few scarves, hat, mittens, etc. to warm the homeless of Lackawanna, Wyoming and Luzerne counties and need supplies please see Pat Cockerill (587-4101or 436-8189) and you can have all the yarn you would like. All of the donated yarn has been laundered and ready to go. So far we have 8 scarves and 1 afghan ready to go - a small drop in the bucket from what we hope to donate.
WE NEED YOUR IDEAS!
We have recently honored several requests for donations of $100 per organization. While we still have some money left in our charity fund, it is going down quickly and we need some ideas on how to build up the fund. If you have any ideas, please contact either Pat Cockerill or any of the other board members so we can continue to help local people in need.
Ring tabs and toys are always being collected and are very welcome additions to the Cockerill attic.
June 2013
We have a date to play bingo with some of the vets who reside at the V.A. hospital in Wilkes Barre. Please mark your calendars for Saturday, Nov. 9 and plan to join us at 2:00 as we help to brighten the day of the residents. More details regarding our meeting time and place to follow closer to the date.
We are always looking for ring tabs and new, unwrapped toys for our annual Toys for Tots collection.
The Charity Committee is hoping to collect new or very gently used winter hats, scarves, and gloves to help to keep the homeless of NEPA warm this upcoming winter. There will be hundreds of men, women and children in need of a bit of warmth when the temps. begin to drop again in the fall and winter. Please give anything you care to contribute to either Barb McCracken or Pat Cockerill.
Spring News
Here's What's Happening With Charity We are continuing our tradition of helping to feed some of the areas' many homeless by sending $100 checks to both St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen in Wilkes Barre and St. Francis Assisi in Scranton.
In the same vain, we are asking anyone who can crochet or knit and has some extra yarn and time to begin making scarfs, mufflers, hats and maybe even an afghan or two to help out our homeless friends. A very disturbing national report was released in early March that stated that not since the Great Depression of 1929 has this country had as many homeless as we currently have. Any items that you donate to help alleviate someone's discomfort next fall and winter will be greatly appreciated and stored at Pat Cockerill's home for distribution when the weather starts to turn chill in the fall. Pat already has one muffler tucked away.
Toys for Tots is off to a nice start for 2013 with 7 toys already stored for December delivery. Please watch the sales and remember the kids.
We have a couple of buckets of ring tabs stored and waiting for more to join them before we can turn them in to help our Toys for Tots. Keep drinking!!
Remember, if you have a special local charity that you would like the Club to donate $100 to please see either Pat Cockerill or Barb McCracken for the forms for you request.
Charity 2012 News
Thanks to your generosity we were able to help out several local organizations to the tune of $830.67 this past year. Next year, with your continued help, we hope to double those figures.
Here is a breakdown of who we helped this year:
$200 sent to local soup kitchens: St. Francis, Scranton and St. Vincent DePaul, Wilkes Barre
$100 donation to Jeffery DePrimo Memorial Golf Tournament
$100 True Friends Animal Shelter, Montrose
$100 Gino Merli Vets Center for bingo
$230.67 Toys for Tots ( from the Toys for Tots separate fund)
As of our December 13 meeting we donated 57 toys to Toys for Tots (46 of them purchased from our Toys for Tots fund).
Remember, if you have a charity that you feel could benefit from a maximum $100 donation from our club please see Pat Cockerill to obtain a request form. The Committee will review one request yearly from each member as long as our charity fund has the funds.
